Course goals

The main aims of the subject Medical Statistics and Informatics are to enable students, future doctors of medicine, the acquisition of basic skills and knowledge of statistics and computer science in medicine: (a) necessary for the understanding of the mechanisms present in healthy and diseased humans (group); (b) in the medical / health care decision making, which is indispensable in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention; and (c) required for a systematic approach to the organization, processing and communication of data, information and knowledge in the health care system.

Course results

Mastering the knowledge and skills of creating and gathering medical data, analysis and drawing conclusions, generating, transmission, storage and use of information in order to solve health problems. Knowledge gained in the course empowers a future medical doctors to be an active participants in the computerization of the health system, to evaluate their own work based on data and information obtained from the practice, and to learn (especially continuing medical education). The knowledge and skills are used in all medical disciplines during and after graduation.

  • Medical Statistics - Theoretical classes (10): Introduction to Statistics; Basic statistical concepts; Arranging data; Statistical description; Probability and probability distributions; Statistical inference; Sample and score values of the parameters of the basic set; Statistical analysis; Methods for testing differences; Correlation and practical classes (exercise, other forms of instruction, study research) (25): Arranging data; Statistical description; Probability and probability distributions; Sample and score values of the parameters of the basic set; Methods for testing differences; Correlation
  • Medical informatics - Theoretical classes (4): Medical data, information and knowledge; Medical decision making; Medical / health information systems; Electronic health records and Practical classes (exercise, other forms of instruction, study research) (11): Searching, retrieval, processing, transmission, and generation of medical data information and knowledge; Medical decision-making (diagnosis, treatment selection, prioritization); "ZIS" (information processes identification, data structures, classifications and nomenclature standardization, privacy and security); Case Study - electronic health records, examples, use, evaluation.

Methods of teaching

Teaching under supervision consists of lectures, seminars, case studies and exercises (which include group discussions predefined content, demonstration of various tools and software, and use of online resources (articles, books, databases)), consultation and examination.
